We’ve heard all of the stigmas surrounding them : “They can’t be soft and responsive.” “They’re not safe around kids.” “They’ll never be as good as domestic horses.”… but Chester is here to prove you wrong, and I promise he will. Chester is a 6yr old, BLM branded mustang that was gathered from the Sand Wash Basin in Colorado in 2021. From there Chester has blossomed into not only being the kindest soul, but an absolute favorite in the saddle. From ranch rodeos to ranch versatility shows to being a whole family type of horse, he’s gone above and beyond to prove his worth in every aspect.
If you’re wanting a responsive and easy ride in the arena, you’ll be pleased when you climb into the saddle that’s on Chester’s back. He’s always in tune with his rider, picking up on not only cues from your legs but your seat as well, making everything feel effortless and easy. He’ll trot and lope the prettiest circles on as much rein as you’d like to give him; never going any faster than asked. Chester side passes easily both directions, will turn on his haunches or on the forehand, can do a flying lead change both directions, and will come to an easy stop or let the dirt fly with his impressive slide. If you feel like having some fun, you can peel his bridle off with the confidence of knowing he's still listening to you every step of the way. Chester has also done a multitude of things in the arena other than just being enjoyed. From ranch rodeos to ranch versatility shows, he’s competed in both with an undeniable presence. Although he’s just started his ranch versatility show career, he’s impressed judges with his natural ability and cadence scoring +1 on several scorecards for a multitude of maneuvers in several different classes. Not only does Chester have the ability to be a show horse, he shows real promise to take his rider to the pay window in the roping pen as he’s been both headed and heeled off of too.
Outside of the arena, Chester has been used extensively to gather, sort, brand, and doctor in all different types of terrains. He’s as cowy as any NCHA competitor and will never quit you; catch him in the dim morning light and put him back at dusk and he will be happy to do it all again the next day. Not only has he been used for work outside, but Chester has also been ridden outside for leisure and is happy to travel down the trail alone or in a group. He handles vehicle and pedestrian traffic with ease as well as any obstacles you may come upon like downed trees, creeks, or street crossings. He’s patient, will ground tie if you need to get off for any reason, and stands quietly for you to get on without taking a step until you’re ready.
Not only is Chester an absolute pleasure in the saddle but he’s just as enjoyable, if not more, to be around on the ground. If there is one thing Chester does not lack, that’s personality. His sweet nature makes all things a breeze from saddling to grooming and he enjoys just hanging out with you like another member of the family. He loads and unloads like any gentleman should and is quiet in the trailer when hauling. We’ve also ridden Chester after he’s had time off and he has never offered to do wrong in any way. Chester has good feet, no vices, and has never required any sort of maintenance or special care. He’s been an absolute joy to have in our program, and we know he’ll be a barn favorite for you too.
