Here’s the highlight of our year! Meet ✨Onyx✨ — this handsome hunk is a 6-year-old, 16.1–16.2hh Percheron/Friesian X gelding. He has the best attributes from both breeds: the calm, unwavering nature of a Perch, with the show-stopping movement from the Friesian. It’s hard not to notice how strikingly stunning he is — he truly gets compliments everywhere he goes! This guy is a jack of all trades — he rides both English and Western, he’s a total trailblazer, and he drives phenomenally! It’s hard to put into words just how special he is — he truly has all the potential to go up the levels in dressage, be a phenomenal field hunter, or become a priceless asset to a working ranch. He is so talented, safe, and FUN to ride.
Onyx has a special way of making you feel like you’re on top of the world when you ride him. His movement is unbelievable — he’s so ground-covering and striking. He knows how to neck rein as well as direct rein. He’s responsive to the leg. He does lateral movements, side-passes, turns on the haunches, and the forehand. He is balanced, and he has a natural rhythm that makes him comfortable and easy to sit at the trot. He collects easily and has three adjustable gaits, as well as lovely transitions in both directions that just continue to get better and better. This guy would absolutely drop jaws in the show ring. He has the basics down pat and is ready to go show off his skills! He is the same horse on and off property, and the same ride every time you pull him out. He’s not one to get upset if you make a mistake, making him suitable for less experienced riders as well!
On the trail, there’s nowhere Onyx won’t go! He’s brave, sturdy, and steady. He’s been on steep, rocky, winding mountain trails and through open fields. He’s a brave leader with his ears forward — happy to be out the whole time. He has the type of canter you can ride all day long out on the trail, and it never gets boring! He’ll cross creeks or go swimming in the river. He has fun splashing and blowing bubbles in the water. He won’t get upset if another horse rides too close, and he’ll ride anywhere you put him in the group. You can also take him out solo with no problems! He would make a phenomenal horse to take fox hunting, and could even be a horse for the hunt staff. He’s brave to the jump, and honest every time with cute knees. He’s done logs, small coops, simple XC combinations, and even jumped the ditches without batting an eye. He’s never refused a jump, and even if you put him in a bad spot, he’ll get you safely to the other side. He’s schooled up to 3’3” with the potential for more. He’s so fun and loaded with potential.
Under harness, Onyx is just as incredible. He just completed a parade for Gen Lafayette's trail in a pair with a very busy environment — tons of people, dogs, food trucks, loud noise, and music, etc. He was unflappable and steady. This guy is 100% traffic-safe, even with the biggest trucks flying by him. He is absolutely stunning under harness, works well single or double, and has been hitched to different farm equipment. He will go through tunnels, over bridges, and right into busy towns with a good work ethic and a happy attitude. He’s light and easy to drive. If you want a well-rounded horse with a proper upbringing and lots of exposure — this is your boy!
Around the farm, Onyx is a priceless asset. He’s handy like a ranch horse — use him to go check fence, work in and out of gates, pony other horses off him, or herd the cows in. He’s happy to do a hard day’s work — the kind of guy that never complains and gets his job done. He’s desensitized to tarps, smoke, equipment, dogs, flags, and just about everything else you can think of. He’s behaved in the barn with no vices; let him sit a couple of weeks and he’ll come right back to work without blinking an eye. He has good ground manners and stands to groom and tack up. He’ll be your best friend for the small fee of some cookies. He comes up to you in the field, and he’s the type you can hop on bareback in a halter and ride in from the pasture. We can’t say enough good things about this incredible horse. The future he holds is bright, and whoever is lucky enough to get him will have many years of success and memories worth a fortune. He’s what dreams are made of — and pretty enough to be a movie star!
